Juxta Digital Continues Putting Literature Online With Virginia Quarterly Review
New York, Tuesday, December 23, 2003 –
Juxta Digital, a Manhattan new-media consultancy specializing in publishing, education, and entertainment, continues putting literature and poetry online with the relaunch of the Virginia Quarterly Review (VQR) website.
Juxta Digital provided a new web design based on Percolator Graphics' redesign of the printed issues. The web design allows VQR to quickly and easily change the site's content and color scheme to correspond to each printed issue. Juxta also implemented its web content management system, Synopsa, specifically developed to handle the online publication of a literary journal. Synopsa allows this prestigious, eighty-year-old journal -- published by the University of Virginia -- to publish a searchable database of 30 years of past issues, author areas for authors to update personal information, calendar listings of readings and events, an email newsletter tool for communicating with contributors and readers, and e-commerce.
The VQR website also offers web only content of great interest to the literary community, including detailed images of manuscripts, letters, and other original documents.
Juxta Digital's previous experience with literary organizations includes the development of pshares.org, the website for Ploughshares literary journal at Emerson College, and the design and development of several websites for the Academy of American Poets, a Manhattan-based non-profit organization that sponsors National Poetry Month. The main Poets website is www.poets.org.
The Virginia Quarterly Review is under new leadership with the appointment of Ted Genoways as its new editor, says Juxta partner, Michael Sutula. We are extremely pleased to have helped Ted extend his vision to the Web.
I chose Juxta Digital because I had published in Ploughshares and used their website, says VQR editor Ted Genoways. That site was not only a model of design and content management, but it was also remarkably self-maintaining. Juxta's innovative program design for VQR goes even further, allowing authors to update their areas of the site and our staff to easily update general content, send bimonthly newsletters, and send e-mail promos -- all without any previous web experience. We get a website with remarkable functionality, and we can maintain it without an in-house webmaster.
